“What are you doing with these mercenaries?” Mace demanded. “I knew you had trouble following orders but I never thought you’d fall this far.”

Ahsoka winced inwardly but she tried not to show any emotion. “Master Windu, please, find somewhere else to put your base.” Ahsoka motioned to the older farmer, who glared at Mace. “These people have been living on this land for generations.”

“This is the perfect tactical location for a base.” Mace showed no emotion, just like a good Jedi. “You will be compensated for your land.”

“Our land, yes,” the old farmer spat. “But you’re paying us nothing for this year’s crop, or our attachment to the land. It’s just dirt to you but it’s our livelihood!”

One of the younger farmers watching the confrontation stepped forward. “Please, just give us a few days to get the crop harvested. At least then, we’d have enough credits to buy a new plot of land.”

“I’m not the one with the credits. I’m sorry about this but in this war, we all have to make sacrifices.” Mace turned back to his men, as if he was about to leave.

“Mace, please,” Ahsoka let some emotion into her voice. “What you’re doing isn’t right.”

Mace spun and glared at her, the whites of his eyes standing out in sharp contrast to his dark skin. “Don’t lecture me on right and wrong, deserter.” He left her and swung onto a speeder.

Ahsoka watched him speed away with his clones. The farmers stared at her. Some looked curious but others glared. All of them stood with their shoulders slumped in defeat.

Without a word, Sugi swung onto her own speeder and zipped up the hill to where the Halo rested. Ahsoka, Latts, and Seripis followed on their own speeders.

When Ahsoka got to the top of the hill, she saw Sugi inspecting her blaster rifle.

Latts swung off the speeder. “Looks like we’re out of a job.”

    Dengar smirked. “Nope.”

Latts’s green eyes widened. “You mean we’re not done?”

Sugi slung the rifle over her shoulder. “We took a job to defend these farmers until their crop was harvested. We don’t break deals.”

“You could be killed. This is Mace Windu, not a bunch of pirates.” Ahsoka held out her hands, pleading for the bounty hunters to do something else.

Sugi stayed focused on her rifle. “All we need to do is give the farmers a few more days so they can get the crop harvested. We’ve fought Sith before. We can handle this.”

Dengar smirked. “We all know how well fighting those Sith went.”

Ahsoka stared at the bounty hunters, realizing there was no way to talk them out of their plan to defend the farmers. A chill shot through Ahsoka. Why is it that I’m trying to talk mercenaries out of defending farmers?

Sugi put a hand on Ahsoka’s shoulder, her face switching from tough to tender. “If you don’t want to fight your friend, I won’t hold it against you.”

Ahsoka pushed Sugi’s hand off her shoulder. “Mace is not my friend.” She paused, realizing the truth to what she’d just said. Ahsoka grabbed a datapad and brought up a holoprojection of the local terrain. “You got a plan?”

Sugi smiled. “I see you have better morals than the Jedi.”

Sugi strikes me as the type of person who normally acts tough, but I think she probably has a soft spot for the people who are working with her. I don't know if the Republic acted the way I'm showing them but it does seem likely that the anti-Jedi setment may have had more backing than just tax-related stuff. Season 5 really hinted that the Republic had some problems and I thought I'd try showing one of those situations in action.
